McKINLEYVILLE – In response to the increasing demand for skilled trade workers, Caltrans has joined forces with Baker Technical Institute, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Humboldt County Workforce Development Board to host a Heavy Highway Construction Trades Academy. The seven-week academy kicked off on Monday in McKinleyville for the 20 participants who will receive free tuition for the comprehensive training academy.

This intensive academy is tailored to accommodate individuals with varied experience levels, from those new to operating equipment and the construction trades to those seeking to further develop their skills. Through practical training with state-of-the-art technology, including heavy equipment simulators and operating equipment under the guidance of professional industry instructors, participants will develop the skills necessary to progress in their careers.

During the apprenticeship readiness program, students will prepare for the construction industry, earning multiple certifications that are essential for securing and advancing in construction trade roles. The program also provides attendees with opportunities to network with hiring companies, thereby enhancing their employment prospects.

"We’re incredibly excited to launch the Caltrans Heavy Highway Construction Trades Academy here in Humboldt County," said Doug Dalton, President of Baker Technical Institute. "As the training provider, BTI is proud to support a program that not only provides participants with high-demand skills but also fortifies the local workforce and economy. By offering this training in Humboldt County, individuals can remain connected to their community while pursuing a brighter future. Workforce development initiatives like this are vital for the sustained resilience and prosperity of rural communities."

The next Heavy Highway Construction Trades Academy is scheduled to be held in Fresno County from October 27 to December 18.
